The Piano

The King of Instruments
One of the largest acoustic instrument, most challenging, highly versatile and certainly rated as most interesting.

The piano earned this title for a number of reasons including it's tonal quality, it's ability to produce melody and accompaniment at the same time and it's broad dynamic range.

Arguably, the world’s most beloved instrument, it is ideal for performing, composing or just playing alone for meditation or reflection. The challenge of playing this unique instrument has inspired great musicians across the world.

With a history that is over 300 years, the story of the piano is the story of a superstar. The piano has been at the centre of almost every music development. Despite the advent of electricity, keyboards and other digital equipment, the beauty and charm of the Piano has been irrepressible over the ages.
Indian Ragas owe their origin to the sounds of the universe and are amongst the oldest unbroken classical tradition of the east.
It is for the first time that Utsav, India's young piano prodigy has drawn on the immense Power of Ragas in the sound of the western classical instrument- The Piano..........to create music that traverses cultural, geographical & musical divides across the globe.
Music knows no age, no laws, no boundaries,no limitations!
It speaks the language of the universe.

The Invention

The invention of the piano is credited to the Italian Bartolmeo Cristofori who created the first gravicembalo col piano e forte (in 1700’s) later shortened to piano forte and then again to piano.  At that time, the two most popular keyboard instruments, the Harpsichord and Clavichord resembled the modern day piano, but their sound was produced by plucking the strings rather than hitting them. Cristofori’s brilliant idea of replacing wire-hooks with leather padded hammers resulted in a new instrument with the power of the harpsichord and volume control mechanism of the Clavichord….the Piano.

Making a Piano

Large and life-size, a gleaming instrument made from around 10,000 parts, over  5000 moving parts, more than 230 strings with a combined pull equaling approx 18 tons, the average piano has 88 keys! Pianos are made of thousands of pieces of wood glued together, to form various parts of the playing mechanism as well as the cabinet. Felt, buckskin, paper, steel, iron, copper, and other materials are also used.

The piano is as much of an engineering marvel as a work of art.

And when this age-old instrument is played by a very young artist-Utsav Lal, One of India’s Youngest Concert Pianist, the beauty and joy of listening to music lovers is supremely sublime.
